Great art takes time to create. In the case of South African-born actor, singer, dancer, voice-artist and all-round performer Chantal Stanfield, she’s invested more than a decade into refining her gift of music.
With the wait finally over, our collective reward is the RJ Benjamin produced “Walk It Off”, Chantal’s stellar debut single! It flirts with funk, dances with disco, and powers through pop elements, while lyrically “Walk It Off” speaks to self-love, empowerment and seeing obstacles as learning curves, not stumbling blocks.
No stranger to the entertainment industry, Chantal graduated with a Theatre and Performance degree from UCT in 2005, and can currently be seen in the popular kykNet soapie Getroud Met Rugby, playing the role of Lindy Davids, the team’s physiotherapist.
Besides her impressive television and film portfolio, Chantal’s talents extend into the world of dance and live performance too. With various cabaret and tribute shows, including stints in the Seychelles, London and Turkish tours of 80’s Mania and Queen, Spanish tours of 80’s All Stars, and her own one-woman cabaret Ladies First (directed by long-time mentor and cabaret doyenne Natalia Da Rocha), Chantal’s a rare combination of seasoned, celebrated and successful.
Her theatre work comprises Annie JR – The Musical, drama Mixed Metaphors and seasons at Cape Town’s burlesque supper club Vaudeville. She headlined the touring Afrikaans musical Die Sideboard, as Stella De Bruyn, caused a stir in Luigi Pirendello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, as The Stepdaughter, rocked out in Rock Of Ages and enjoyed sell-out crowds this past festive season at The Baxter Theatre in her one-woman play From Koe’siestes To Kneidlach.
As 2018 unravels Chantal, along with her debut single “Walk It Off”, is prepped and ready to influence, engage and entice an entirely new audience with her powerful pop music statement.
Her appeal is immediate and “Walk It Off” intoxicating and confirmatory of a young artist whose voice will be heard and applauded, above and beyond the multiple standing ovations her litany of work’s already charmed.

Over the past week, Thembisa Mdoda, Proverb And Lira visited schools in and around Alexandra and Soweto as part of the #KrushGoodness campaign by Clover Krush - a brand synonymous with spreading goodness. The aim of the campaign is to equip over 10 000 underprivileged children across the country with brand new school shoes begins as the new school year begins.
The brand, together with the SA Department of Education, conducted research to identify 12 schools across Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape with children who are in desperate need of school shoes.
Over the next few weeks, the 10 000 pairs of school shoes will be distributed to 12 schools that the brand has identified throughout the five provinces. The shoe partner for the campaign is Smart Steps by Novita Shoes. In addition to being Proudly South African, Smart Steps are strong, reliable, tough and comfortable – the ideal shoe for young learners.
Other familiar faces who will be joining Krush on this journey to spread goodness are:
Nonhlanhla Hlatshwayo, Senior Brand Manager for Krush, notes that goodness has always been at the core of everything that Krush stands for - from their brand promise to what is put in the product – and this evolved into something bigger to spread further goodness throughout communities in SA with this campaign.
“The effect of goodness – emotional and functional – no matter how big or small, can do wonders for people’s physical and mental wellbeing, even encouraging others to feel as good as they do. Krush is intrinsically good for you because it is a 100% pure fruit juice (packed with healthy fruits such as mango, apple and orange - and no other additives), and is enriched with vitamins A,C and E – adding further goodness. It thus makes sense to associate the brand with positivity and goodness which is so needed in our society that experiences so much negativity daily. Through our #KrushGoodness campaign, we are setting out to show that adding a little bit of goodness every day has the power to change the world for the better. If we start our day with one good deed, it has the power to transform someone’s day, leading to them adding a bit of goodness to someone else’s day, and so the goodness spreads, ultimately inspiring a world of goodness,” says Hlatshwayo.
Why would a fruit juice brand opt for a school shoes drive, you may ask? The answer is simple, says Hlatshwayo. “Children represent the future and they represent innocence and goodness, and so if we add a little dose of goodness to make it easier for them to get to school so they can concentrate on learning, it adds goodness into their lives and as a result, to the community at large. Krush is more than just a great tasting fruit juice; it’s a great fruit juice that cares about its community and stands for something bigger.”
“It’s incredible just how fast goodness can spread, even when it begins with one small action from just one person. The fact that we have some of South Africa’s most loved personalities supporting this campaign means that we can spread a whole more goodness a lot further, together,” Hlatshwayo adds.

Delivering on its promise to bring world class entertainment to Tshwane, Sun International’s Time Square in Menlyn confirms that internationally acclaimed Chris de Burgh will perform at the Sun Arena on 2 March 2018. This is one of only two shows de Burgh will do while in South Africa as part of his A Better World album tour.
With an illustrious career spanning over three decades and a long list of platinum selling albums, de Burgh has a significant following of fans in South Africa. His show at the Sun Arena is expected to sell out soon.
This British-Irish singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, known for his art rock performances and who also writes pop-oriented material, has had several top 40 hits in the UK and two in the US, but he is more popular in other countries, particularly Norway and Brazil. Songs like “Man on the line”, “High on Emotion”, “Into the Light” and "Lady in Red" have made him a household name in South Africa.
The son of Colonel Charles Davison, a British diplomat, and Maeve Emily de Burgh, an Irish secretary, de Burgh took his mother's name, "de Burgh", when he began performing. In the 1960s, de Burgh’s maternal grandfather bought a twelfth century castle where, once it had been converted into a hotel, the family settled, and it was here that the young de Burgh started performing for guests and audiences.
With a Master of Arts degree in French, English and History, de Burgh’s self-written lyrics are well thought through, articulate and enough to tug at the heartstrings of romantics and music-lovers. A Better World sees this music icon fuse so many styles, tempos and instrumentation. And whilst ballads, rock anthems and solo performances with band or orchestral ensemble pieces can be expected from de Burgh in yet another evocative show, he infuses rock and pop with regional flavour, from Caribbean to Celtic.
As always de Burgh has crafted this album from several themes and topics close to his heart, including love, war and adventure, travel, discovery and home-coming, the past, the present – and the future. This tour will to the country be the ninth one de Burgh has embarked on and marks the 25th anniversary since he toured South Africa in celebration of the lifting of the cultural boycott.
Catch de Burgh at the Sun Arena at Time Square on 2 March 2018 at the Sun Arena at Time Square. Tickets are priced between R460 and R800 per person at www.bigconcerts.co.za.
Enjoy dinner and a show in true theatre-district style
There’s nothing to beat the sense of occasion of an outing to theatre, selecting your seats, buying your tickets, getting dressed up and deciding where to go for your pre-show dinner. The anticipation is almost as wonderful as the experience, made even more so when the quality of the show, the venue and the restaurant combine to deliver a complete package.
Montecasino has evolved into one of Gauteng’s prime ‘theatre districts’, with three theatres offering a wide variety of show genres, concerts, and both local and international productions.
The world-class Teatro, which this year again won the well-earned Best of Joburg Reader’s Choice Award for Best Theatre for the eighth consecutive year, and the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre and Studio Theatre.
A theatre district is typically surrounded by an abundance of restaurants, and Montecasino is no exception, with a vast variety of fine dining, casual dining and fast food options to cater for theatre-goers.
Options include those on the outdoor Piazza, where the Teatro takes centre stage, flanked by Col’Cacchio, and Milk & Honey, the recently-opened Hussar Grill and Ocean Basket. Aarya at SunSquare Montecasino hotel is one of the precinct’s three hotels that offer exceptional dining options, along with Punchinello’s at Southern Sun Montecasino and Medeo at the elegant Palazzo hotel.
New to Montecasino and located opposite the Pieter Toerien theatres is La Rosa Mexican Grille and Tequileria, which is rapidly proving to be a favourite for “exploding flavours, electric atmosphere, vibrant colours, festivities, and the magic of Mexico – promising an unforgettable experience.
The dining options go on, and include Italian, Thai, Greek, Chinese, Mediterranean, Japanese, Indian, tapas, family and more which guarantee that there’s something for every visitor to Montecasino.
Says Mike Page, General Manager of Montecasino, “An outing to the theatre is an experience that is enhanced by dining at a favourite restaurant or somewhere you’ve been dying to try, and at Montecasino there’s no shortage of quality options to choose from.”

Warner Music South Africa is proud to present the debut album from multi-talented singer-songwriter Zandie Khumalo.
There’s no stopping Zandie Khumalo as she sets out to stake her claim in the local music scene. The younger sister of vocalist Kelly Khumalo, Zandie steps out of the shadows and shows her fans what she is made of on ‘Izikhali ZamaNtungwa’ her debut Afrosoul album.
It literally means ‘Weapons of the maNtungwa’ and is inspired by her clan name. Her heritage and identity are close to her heart, and as an Afrosoul singer keeping it real and soulful are part of the deal.
First out of the blocks of the 13 track album is ‘Nangu Makoti’ anchored in the rich traditional rhythms inspired by the traditional wedding songs. It’s a fun simple and uplifting sing along song with infectious celebratory beats. The song is accompanied by a beautifully shot video that explodes in colour and dance.
The rousing single ‘Nami Ngiyalifuna’, a love song dedicated to the singles wishing to find love one day. It is produced by Mojalefa ‘Mjakes’ Thebe who co-wrote it with Zandie. Love is a golden thread that runs through Izikhali ZamaNtungwa, as Zandie puts it: ‘I sing about the simplicity of love. The little things that we women pay attention to, the phone calls until 3am, flowers, holidays and those kind of treats. We love being put up as a profile picture on whatsapp or declared Woman Crush Wednesday (#WCW).’
‘Ungenzani’ doesn’t stray from the theme. It’s another celebration of love as a woman shares her innermost feelings and thoughts about how their loved one makes them feel. It’s a declaration of the deep emotions that are brought about by being in love and being loved.
Zandie takes a trip on the exotic side as she experiments with a Portuguese song in ‘Fiesta’ and the results are nothing short of spectacular. Not only does she sound good as she seductively sings about the superhero man of her dreams, but the different flavour it adds to the album and gives ‘Izikhali ZamaNtungwa’ an edge and a different appeal.
Zandie was born in Thokoza, East Rand but grew up in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal before returning back to Gauteng where she moved around places such as Graceland in Brakpan, Vosloorus, Spruitview and Alberton. This nomadic life prepared her for later in life as she managed to understand people easy and adapt to change fast. The experience also made it easy for her to straddle the vastly different worlds of modest rural KwaZulu-Natal, the vibrancy of a township and the sophistication of city life – all these elements influence her music and the subjects she touches on.
After toiling for years as her sister’s stylist, backing vocalist and manager and much persuasion from her husband and Kelly, Zandie stepped into the recording studio to record for leisure. ‘I thought I was just singing and recording for myself, but a beautiful song came out of it called Themba which was my first single in 2016. It went to radio and I never looked back since then.
She released other songs like Soze and Bittersweet which got the industry to sit up and notice her talent.
Now with the prospects on an upward trajectory, Zandie’s eyes are fixed on the prize. ‘I just hope this album gets me where I want to be and for people to know who I am and what I can offer. I dream of being on big stages overseas with the biggest names ever.’
