If you are looking for the perfect warm, comfortable sheep's wool boot then we have just the thing for you!
We stumbled upon Carbon South Africa a few weeks ago and were blown away by the look, design and affordability of this South African product. Everyone knows there are quite a few options of sheepskin boots on the market, mostly overpriced because of brand and not always of a top class quality or even comfortable to wear.
As we are always supportive of anything homegrown, we jumped at the chance to experience this brand and boy were we impressed.
Gavin , the man behind the brand had this to say - "Carbon South Africa was born about 6 years ago in Cape Town, We saw a gap in the market when we could not find any really good quality sheep wool boots, Nobody seems to be interested in simply making good quality sheep wool boots, They either use synthetic materials or use the thinnest types to skimp on costs & then in some cases to cut costs even more they outsource labour from China. Because the local manufacturing footwear industry in South Africa suffers dearly from the attractive labour costs coming out of China we struggled at the beginning to setup a reliable manufacturing system,
Its expensive to manufacture locally but, if you can figure this out you've solved most of your problems."
Enter Carbon South Africa sheepskin boots!
The Carbon South Africa Mystique sheepskin boot is available in dark brown, camel and black and each pair of boots is handmade by South Africans using only South African raw materials, including locally sourced sheep's wool and thick natural suede which makes the boots wearable and adaptive to all seasons.
My Carbon South Africa boots have already served me so well, as a radio presenter on a breakfast show with early mornings and outside broadcasts in all weather, they are my go-to choice of footwear. One can even purchase a suede water repellant through Carbon South Africa's website to ensure that they are long lasting and look good for years to come. What also stands out for me in this particular boot is the reinforced heel that holds one's foot adding extra comfort and preventing sagging as is so often the case in other sheep's wool boots on the market.
The Land Rover Africa Cup returns this spring to the prestigious Inanda Club, situated in the heart of Sandton.
The Land Rover Africa Cup, a unique knockout polo championship, now in its 6th year, offers an action-packed day for polo lovers, which will include a display of exceptional horsemanship.
The 2015 event included participation by teams from Ghana, Uganda, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Kenya as well as several South African teams. More than 3 000 people witnessed the closely contested and fast paced final where the South African Land Rover team beat the Imlingo team, also from South Africa, to win the coveted Land Rover Africa Cup trophy.
The 2016 tournament, which will take place over the weekend of 16 - 18 September, will feature some of Africa’s top polo players & teams up against their South African counterparts in an enthralling weekend of polo. “Hugely successful in previous years, the Land Rover Africa Cup continues to provide a platform for exciting and dynamic polo action.
We are continuing to grow and expand this tournament into one of the biggest Polo Tournaments on the Continent”, says Paul Oosthuizen, Inanda Club General Manager. “The Annual Land Rover Africa Cup is a glamorous event, quintessentially polo and complements our vehicles perfectly. To that end it provides us with the ideal opportunity to showcase the New Range Rover Evoque Convertible ahead of its local launch and in it’s natural habitat – amongst the luxurious Inanda setting,” comments Lisa Mallett, Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover and sub-Sahara Africa.
Land Rover, the title sponsor, together with the City of Johannesburg the host city partner, invite polo enthusiasts to savour a mix of sportsmanship with a blend of luxury design and VIP experiences.
The City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Councillor Ruby Mathang, says 2016 marks the sixth consecutive year that Joburg Tourism and the City have supported this event.
“As the City, each initiative we put our weight behind needs to benefit all residents and the developmental aspect of this tournament addresses just that,” says MMC Mathang. He says over the years the Polo Development Programme has created several opportunities for talented but
underprivileged players to participate in a sport that is considerably expensive and flourish as true professionals. “Inanda Club has made considerable gains in driving this transformation to make polo more accessible to the broader public,” says MMC Mathang.
The 2016 tournament is set to offer some of the best polo in the African equestrian calendar.
The highlights of the day include fabulous fashions; entertainment and an extensive list of celebrities in attendance; a showcase by Airbus Helicopters, and the exciting Horse vs Machine Race. This year, the race will witness the New Range Rover Evoque Convertible up against the best thoroughbred of the tournament.
The theme this year is ‘Quintessential Polo – Above & Beyond’, inspired by the Range Rover Evoque it resonates the quality, class and a lifestyle appreciated by polo enthusiasts. Fashion aficionados will enjoy a carefully curated experience as they gather on the scenic Inanda clubhouse terraces to witness quintessential spring trends created by top African fashion designers.
Corporate hospitality packages include a variety of privately owned suites where spectators have the option of reveling in the action from the edge of the pitch or appreciating the towering view from the top floor of the Inanda Club House.

A firm long-term favourite among Johannesburg diners, the charming La Vie en Rose Restaurant is now located at the Killarney Country Club, in an expansive, modern and inviting purpose-built space.
KCC La Vie en Rose, as it’s now known, presents the same indoor-outdoor feel, owner-run involvement and appealing touches of its Illovo predecessor, but in a setting made all the more remarkable by lush lawns; floor-to-ceiling windows and stacking doors; stylish design and décor; and secure, central location in the country club’s grounds.
Expect muted rainbow stone, wrought iron balustrading, shades of grey with occasional pink accents and wooden feature walls. Expect cutting-edge light fittings, over-sized ceramic tiles and a pale granite bar counter. Expect gorgeously appointed unisex restrooms in wood, glass and chrome, as well as a pram/wheelchair-friendly area.
Yanky says, “We had big dreams and couldn’t be more excited about how they’ve come to life. Our little restaurant has grown up and we’re proud to have created a space that will be the backdrop for some very special memories”.
Outside is the al fresco seating for which La Vie has long been loved, only bigger, and complemented by a free-standing stage: fully powered and finished in wood and tile. There’s sexy signage throughout, plus the tongue-in-cheek messaging and frivolous cheer that’s become so widely associated with owners Yanky Woolf and Rony Ezerzer
There’s also a special L-shaped bench area, complete with soft cushions, for more informal gatherings – this is known as Charlie’s Corner, in honour of a long-term patron.
The space itself is 238m2 and can accommodate 300 guests. Its 40 staff is set to grow to 60, so that the brand can achieve the same levels of sincere attention, dedicated service, delicious food and smooth function handling they’re known for. The menu, too, is due to evolve slightly in due course.
Says Rony, “I’ve finally got my dream kitchen, so watch this space, we’ve been having fun. You’ll still find our old crowd pleasers such as the deep fried toblorone and homemade burgers, but we’ll be sneaking in a few new sensations that will be sure to tickle your tastebuds.”
As for the Killarney Country Club, KCC President Gary Levy is thrilled at the addition of La Vie en Rose and its loyal following to KCC’s portfolio. He says, “Killarney Country Club is excited with the new offering its members, guests and visitors, the creative and delicious cuisine of La Vie en Rose. Located in the heart of Johannesburg, KCC La Vie en Rose welcomes everyone to enjoy our new garden jewel.”
KCC La Vie en Rose is open 7 days a week, Monday to Sunday. On Mondays its trading hours are 7am to 4pm and from Tuesday to Sunday the restaurant welcomes diners from 7am to 10pm. Parties, showers, celebrations and corporates welcome.
