The headlines will read, "J'Something to open new restaurant at Sun International's new property in Menlyn called Time Square."
This is true. Its official, I'm opening my first restaurant. But it’s SO much more than that.
We moved from Portugal to South Africa when I was 7 years old. My father got offered a post at Fish River Sun in the Eastern Cape to be the Food & Beverage manager. Something he did his whole life. My mother at the time worked at the Fish River Diner, feeding hungry fisherman, as they both tried to ensure my brother and I had the best upbringing.
Fast-forward a little and my mother ended up owning her own restaurant in Port Alfred for over 15 years, a place called Butler's Riverside Restaurant. My late father worked for Sun International for over 20 years starting at the Landrost way back in the day to running the Cascades at Sun City and many more Sun International properties.
Why do I say this is so much more than a restaurant?
Two weeks after my dad's passing I got a call from the Sun International office for a meeting. They opening this new place in Menlyn called Times Square and they have 3 signature restaurants of which they would like one of those spaces to belong to me.
Now tell me this isn't weird?
Without them knowing who my dad or my mother were. Without them knowing my father had passed away. I get offered my dream, my own restaurant, with the very company that was responsible for bringing me to South African soil?!
This is why I say this is more than just a restaurant. This brand and restaurant has a whole new level of meaning for me.
So when you come as a guest to Something's Cooking by J'Something I want you to feel that emotion. I want you to feel the love not only in the food and how it is prepared, but in the scenery and in the service.
Something's Cooking by J'Something is a home away from home. Its a non pretentious, quality experience. Although the food itself doesn't have a specific theme as per say, much like my music, it is honest food. It is flavour filled food. It is food cooked with love. These are recipes I myself created and served countless times in my home.
There is a mixture between my Portuguese roots, my South African upbringing, and my latest obsessions such as Japanese cuisine and healthy alternatives.
At Something's Cooking all I want is to create a memorable experience for you, your friends, and your family. It’s a place where I want the food to create conversation, laughter, and happy memories. Its core foundation is sharing, so come hungry and come with your people.
I sincerely look forward to hosting you with my incredible team.
Portugal born Joao Da Fonseca, known to most of the world as J’Something is well known for his chart topping hits as the lead singer of popular South African band Mi Casa.
Together with his band the 27-year-old singer/song writer has gone to win multiple awards and set new radio and sales records. They have toured the continent and gained a fan base of millions locally and internationally; one would think that J’Something would be content with stealing our hearts through his music.
If you were to glance through the musicians’ social media pages you would see that he loves to cook, as most of us do, what we didn’t know however was that this “love” would turn into another channel of reaching his many fans and creating new ones.
In early October of 2014, word of a J’Something cooking show made the rounds, the ‘aspiring chef’ and his team soon announced a much-anticipated Something’s Cooking Season 1. The 13- episode season proved to be a success reaching over 2 million viewers.
Since the launch of the stars cooking show he has been invited to cook at festivals, exhibitions, cooking classes and private functions. His partnership with Unilever also saw him host a 13 part cooking show called What’s For Dinner on SABC 3 that reached more than 10 million viewers.
J’Something has collaborated with world class chefs, partnered on campaigns and collaborated with international brands bringing a unique offering to influential marketing and brand integrations.
“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying!” Michael Jordan gives J’Something this inspiration to be the best he can be every single day.
