Gate Theatre Proudly Presents The Irish Premiere of 'Constellations'

The Gate Theatre is proud to bring to the stage the Irish premiere of Nick Payne’s award-winning play Constellations. Winner of the Evening Standard Best Play Award, it was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Play and has won acclaim with productions both on the West End and Broadway.

This much anticipated production will be directed by Marc Atkinson Borrull and star Brian Gleeson as Roland and Sarah Morris as Marianne. The production will preview from 6th May, officially open on 11th May and run until 2nd June on the Gate stage.

In Constellations, every decision you have and haven't made exists in a parallel universe of infinite possibilities. Epic yet intimate, this funny, sharp and heart-breaking play asks which of our choices make for a life well lived.

Marianne is a quantum physicist. Roland is a beekeeper. They meet. They hit it off. Or maybe they don't. They go home together. Or maybe they never speak again.

Constellations is a drama about time and memory, about death and grief, playful and profound, comic and mournful. It asks big questions about existence, purpose and free will, but also feels weightless and fun.- The Guardian

The sterling creative team includes Set & Costume Designer Molly O’Cathain, Lighting Designer Paul Keogan and Composer & Sound Designer Kevin Gleeson.

Playwright and screenwriter Nick Payne made his debut at the Royal Court Theatre in 2010 with his play Wanderlust. His debut TV series of the same name starred Toni Collette and Steven Mackintosh as Joy and Alan, a couple in search of ways to save their marriage. The show was produced by Drama Republic and directed by Luke Snellin, airing on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix for the rest of the world.

In 2009 he won the prestigious George Devine Award with his play If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet starring Rafe Spall. In 2012 a production of the same work in New York starred Jake Gyllenhaal and was directed by Michael Longhurst. Also in 2012, Constellations opened at the Royal Court Upstairs starring Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins and directed by Michael Longhurst, and transferred to the West End where it received universally glowing reviews. It won the Evening Standard Best Play Award and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Play.

In 2015 Constellations transferred to Broadway. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, and directed by Michael Longhurst, it won outstanding reviews. Jake Gyllenhaal carried on to star in Nick's play A Life, which ran at The Public Theater and on Broadway in 2019 and was nominated for several Tony Awards. The recent West End run of Constellations, directed by Mike Longhurst at the Vaudeville Theatre and starring four separate casts, won an Olivier Award in 2022 for Best Revival.
